Hi everyone!

Thank you for visiting my blog! My name is Abrianna and I am a fifth grade teacher in Wisconsin. I have been in education for the better part of a decade, starting as an educational aid in special education. I am a second career teacher who started in business and left corporate America to teach elementary school.

My Background

I have taught fifth grade for the past five years. Prior to teaching fifth grade I was a special education aid in self contained rooms for six years. I have a Bachelors in English, Master's in Elementary Education and currently pursuing a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist certification. I will also soon be starting my certification for my principal license. My academic research focuses on best practices in ELA instruction and supporting struggling readers.

Why I Teach

I started my teaching career later in life after leaving the lucrative corporate America. I was a mom of two and was strongly persuaded to go into teaching by my best friend's mom. I never saw myself as a teacher until the first day I stepped into a middle school English class, it was in this classroom that I found my "purpose". As cliché as that may sound, it is true. I witnessed the gap in reading that I was blind to before and it broke my heart. I love reading and always have since childhood and I wanted to show kids that reading can be fun and exciting, it wasn't all dense texts with lots of words. Throughout my academic journey, I have had to reflect on my teaching philosophy and the type of teacher I want to be. I teach because I enjoy sharing my passion for reading and learning with my students. I enjoy creating a space where they feel comfortable to make mistakes, try new things and be creative.

What is Teaching Wizards 101?

Teaching Wizards 101 is based on my classroom theme and a space where I would like to share my passion for teaching with other educators. I intend to share my knowledge and experience in hopes that what I have learned and done can help another teacher who could be struggling with something in the classroom. I also hope to provide a resource for families to come to and find ways to support their students at home to build a stronger connection between home and school. Finally, Teaching Wizards 101 is a place to collaborate with other educators.
